CHAPTER

NINETEEN

Boots twisted the screwdriver to tighten the last retaining screw and slipped. The point of the metal tool gouged across his index knuckle, opening a small gash. Blood poured from the wound, and he cursed as he moved his hand so he wouldn’t drip the red stuff all over the customer’s boat. The last thing he wanted to do today was add to his workload. Temperatures had taken a nosedive, and this winter’s predictions were that it was going to be rough. Snow was imminent, and the boat owner holdouts had been calling all morning to get their crafts winterized and stored immediately. Of course, the problems were time and demand—not much of the first and plenty of the last.

Rail, Flipper, Boots, and one town mechanic had been busting their balls all day to get as many done before the big freeze started. Only a few were left in the lineup, and Boots was debating on staying out on the pier until they were done. Once they were done, he could concentrate on other tasks for the upcoming weekend. He reached for a clean shop towel and pressed it against the wound.

Perhaps if his mind hadn’t been on other events, he might not have hurt himself.

“Looks bad, brother,” a voice called out.

Boots turned to see Nutter heading toward him. He had no trouble seeing the aggressive swagger in the man’s long strides and how he held himself tall in order to look down on his opponent. Boots found it more amusing than intimidating. Nutter and he were close to the same size, but where Nutter had the big manly dad bod going, Boots was cut and lean.

“I’ve had worse and lived to tell about it. What’s up, Nutter? Coming to work the marina for a while?”

Nutter stopped and crossed his arms. “No, I came to see you, brother. I don’t like it when men sniff around my old ladies.”

Boots pressed the towel harder. “Old ladies. I didn’t think plurality was acceptable.”

Nutter looked confused. “What the fuck? Don’t start giving me fancy words and double talk. I’m talking about you being over at Mama J’s a few nights ago.”

Boots kept quiet and waited. Many times, silence was more effective than bluster.

“I come by to see my kids, bring them a present, and you’re there, confusing her.”

Boots took the cloth away from his knuckle and looked at the gash. Not bad enough to need stitches, but it would leave another scar; one among many.

“We been together a long time. Too long for some yahoo to come in and interfere.”

Boots picked up a bottle of superglue from the open box of tools and supplies behind him. One-handed, he managed to pinch the skin together and squeeze out a small drop of glue onto it. It burned like hell, but fused the wound shut.

“That’s what you’re doing. Interfering. She and I are working things out, and I’m telling you, you need to back off and quit making her more confused than she already is.” Nutter waggled his fingers around his temple.
